Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth
Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) provides gifted K-12 students online and offline learning programs. The Learning Management System (LMS) used for online programs required optimization to reflect a 21st century learning system with the latest technology, innovative learning and pedagogy.
How might we design a common system for the online programs that is reflective of the master brand (Johns Hopkins University), scalable for the future, and strengthens the instructional design for both gifted students and instructors?
Stakeholder Interviews, Observational Sessions, Live Prototype, Usability Test, Style Tiles, Element Collage, Design System
By facilitating user testing with CTY students and distilling the research, we learned that designing for the youngest user will also satisfy the needs of the oldest user. Through an atomic design approach, FreshForm developed an improved visual system for the LMS to customize the experience for all students. The user experience allows students to select their learning view to be more immersive or standard based on preference. A helpful onboarding flow educates students on helpful tips and tricks before jumping into a course or lesson. And a welcoming student dashboard and optimized navigation created an easier way for students to learn.
